Shanta Devarajan

The funny thing about my uncle Shanta, is that he is certainly the most brilliant one in the family – and could be one of the smartest people I know personally – yet he walks around completely unassuming and unfazed by his title. Today we talked about everything from rap music to Sri Lanka’s sudden growth in infrastructure despite a corrupt regime. Sri Lanka always seems to get bailed out – either by a natural disaster or a bizarre turn of events – their economy always bounces from near collapse – His peers always tell him that God must be Sri Lankan 🙂 I always felt this way.

Here is his short bio:

Shanta Devarajan is the Chief Economist of the World Bank’s Africa Region. Since joining the World Bank in 1991, Mr.Devarajan has been a Principal Economist and Research Manager for Public Economics in the Development Research Group, as well as the Chief Economist of the Human Development Network. More recently, Mr. Devarajan was Chief Economist of the South Asia Region. Mr. Devarajan was the Director of the World Development Report 2004, Making Services Work for Poor People. Before 1991, he was on the faculty of Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. The author or co-author of over 100 publications, Mr. Devarajan’s research covers public economics, trade policy, natural resources and the environment, and general-equilibrium modeling of developing countries. Born in Sri Lanka, Mr. Devarajan received his A.B. in mathematics from Princeton University and his Ph.D. in economics from the University of California at Berkeley.

His father worked for the U.N. – He called me Senator – that was his nickname for me growing up. He took me seriously when all I ate was my mother’s butter cake. Shanta Uncle told me today that his blog has helped the average person relate to what is seen as information for the “high society.” He doesn’t buy into the exclusivity of Washington. I wanted to share his blog with you all.

Stadium Status Family Member – Peace, and much love to you – John Baptist!
